Silver Spring, MD--Jacobs Publishing, LTD has announced that it is
withdrawing its financial support from the Association of Digital
Publishers as of January 1. Jacobs Publishing, one of the founding members
of the ADP, has remained the organization's largest financial backer.
"We will continue to support the goals and professional aims of the
ADP," said JPL owner Todd Jacobs. "But we will no longer continue to fund
the lion's share of the organization's operations."
The ADP was formed earlier this year as a cooperative venture between
various electronic publishing houses. It rapidly developed the industry's
first independent quality-assurance program, and promoted a series of
educational seminars aimed at bringing electronic publishing into the
mainstream.
Unfortunately, with the notable exception of Eastgate Systems, many of
the industry's established houses were openly hostile to the idea of an
independent professional group. Many felt that consumer education and
objective standards-setting would infringe on their proprietary operations.
Jacobs Publishing, a long-time proponent of industry cooperation, chose to
support the bulk of the ADP's operations alone.
"We believe in what the ADP is doing. In order for electronic
publishing to become a mass-market concern, small publishers need to
overcome the provincial idea that they have re-invented the wheel. The
future of electronic publishing lies in consumer and industry awareness,
not in proprietary marketing schemes or product-specific interfaces from
individual publishers," said Mr. Jacobs.
Since the majority of ADP seminars were developed by Jacobs Publishing
using JPL-donated funds, the company has decided to re-absorb its
educational packages for its own private use. "We will no longer expend
our operating budget or resources on promoting the industry as a whole. We
developed the educational content at our own expense as a public service,
but have reluctantly decided that the industry is not ready for cooperative
ventures at the present time. It is extremely unfortunate, but no one can
expect JPL to single-handedly promote the entire electronic publishing
industry in the face of so much apathy from our colleagues."
Jacobs Publishing will retain its ADP membership, but will no longer
subsidize ADP operations. Jacobs Publishing plans to announce the
formation of its own internal educational division in the first quarter of
1995.
